Grace, Grass and Towels #10

June 2009

Faygo 20 ounce

Half empty or half full?

Framers preferred several options for refreshment in the stifling heat: V8® Splash, a carrot orange color; Coke®, a brown bubbly brew; Sprite®, a tangy clear bubbly; and water, natural, with no trademark.

While the workers hammered, they listened to salsa music, which reminded me of dining at a Tex-Mex restaurant. The builder added a Latino flair to our meeting inside by fielding a call from Brazil.

Recommended snack from a worker’s bakery.

This summer we’ve had unusual weather for Alabama—high heat, topping at 100 degrees temperature—with low humidity. Did I fall asleep and wake up in Arizona?

No pinching necessary—all I need to do is look out my window and I’m reminded of where I am.

front porch

New front porch.

Workers framed the porch today. The depth and roof extension created a shadowy entry inside—a darkness I didn’t anticipate.

With a family team effort, a cartoon idea sprouted:

  • My daughter’s perspective—draw one of my Scripture cartoons as a thank you/Christmas card to the builders
  • I woke up with a light bulb idea—to show the builder constructing a manger
  • A conversation idea from Martin—in each panel, the carpenter asks, “Is He here?” with the last panel showing angels singing “Emmanuel—He’s Here!”
