The question is a familiar one. I asked it as a child on my way to my grandmother’s house. My daughter asked it on many family trips. In the last few months of Belshazzar’s reign, Daniel receives another vision that prompted this question. The vision revealed further details on the little horn from his vision three years earlier.
The answer? Given immediately—until the sanctuary is cleansed. The time period? Agonizing—2,300 years!
As I read the day’s news stories, the question how long? becomes repetitive. Jesus’ disciples asked him a similar question. Jesus answered with several warnings. He also told his disciples to study the book of Daniel!
Applying Daniel’s time prophecy in a personal sense, sin tramples truth in me until Christ cleanses the sanctuary of my heart. Paul, in Hebrews, assures me that the risen, triumphant Christ sits at the right hand of God, interceding for my sin. Christ’s blood secured my redemption.
Daniel received an answer to his question, and partial understanding. With some simple math, I can figure that the 2,300 year mark passed over a century ago. At that mark, Christ’s work in the heavenly sanctuary turned towards cleansing, preparing for his second coming. I found the answer to my end-time question of how long? in Matthew 24—no man knows, but stay ready!
“let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.” (Hebrews 10:22-23 NIV)
