“Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.”
—Revelation 1:7, 8 KJV

Alone on an island, exiled for his faithful preaching, John the beloved sees Christ’s glory. Christ gives John hope that his work and those of other believers is not in vain here on earth. As John sees Christ at work in his priestly role, John falls as one dead, but Christ gives reassurance of his omnipotence and power over death.
“And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last: I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death. Write the things which thou hast seen, and the things which are, and the things which shall be hereafter;”
—Revelation 1:17-19 KJV
The God that existed before us, and created us and our universe, came to our world to redeem us. Born in human form, witnessing, preaching, loving, and, finally, dying for our sins, Jesus rose from that death and returned to Heaven. John relates that every eye will see Christ’s return to this earth to make all things new. Christ’s shed blood paid for our sins, ensuring that purity and unity in His creation will one day be restored.
“And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation; And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth.”
—Revelation 5:9, 10
