Seeing Red: Thursday Doors

How many shades of red can you imagine? Vermilion Cliffs National Monument makes a colorful side trip to the iconic photo destination of the Colorado River’s Horseshoe Bend in Glen Canyon National Recreational Area. The cliffs are a composite of silt and desert dunes, hardened with minerals such as iron oxide and manganese.

Travelling along Arizona Highway 89A, we drove across Lees Ferry via the Navajo Bridge (re-built in 1995). As the cliffs shone golden red along the highway, we searched for House Rock Road that leads to sites such as The Wave and Buckskin Gulch.

As we started along the icy, snow-crunched road in our Subaru Ascent, another group on foot told us they were returning to arrange a car tow. Also discovering a permit is required to explore these areas, we shelved our wanderings for warmer days when all we’d worry about is flash floods and sand.

Once again along Highway 89A, we stopped to explore a stacked-rock house and photograph the expansive views.

Old Look, New Look, Fresh Look: Thursday Doors

Traveling in Michiana, a geographical term combining towns in Michigan and Indiana along the southeastern shore of Lake Michigan, we wobbled between eastern and central time zones. The owner of this collection generously stayed open as we browsed three barns, and then some. Quality constructed pieces; reasonable prices, many doors! A unique outhouse included a chandelier, but I chose the fresh air route so there is no photo.

Doors, inside and out.

This bright red door fit perfectly in Dune Billies Beach Cafe’s fun collection of wall art; found in our delivery of a few donations to the “Books” Little Free Library (lower right of photo).

Finding the cafe closed gives us reason to return.

One favorite memory is sharing a pint of Valpo Velvet Peanut Butter Ice Cream with my husband as our laundry tumbled in the dryer at our hotel. Inspired, we stopped at the original Valparaiso shoppe after hiking the dunes the next day.

I appreciate the loading dock door, introducing Valpo Velvet to the world.

These butterflies inspire travelers at Amtrak’s depot in St. Joseph, Michigan. The mural, created by Anat Ronen, in my view, evokes our continued search for freedom and nurture. While exploring the Lake Michigan shoreline, favorite stops included a carousel ride, Silver Beach Pizza, and walking the dunes by the North Pier Lighthouse.

I thought I was pushing the definition of “door” as I considered posting this photo of the North Pier Lighthouse. I could barely see the crack line of the white door. Then, following the line of the catwalk, I noticed the red door on the second tier. I had not seen this door as I snapped the photo; nor during processing for this post.

The catwalk provides safety for the workers as storms wash Lake Michigan’s shore. In winter, the waves look as if they have been playing freeze tag.

“And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up, and saw him, and said unto him, Zacchaeus, make haste, and come down; for to day I must abide at thy house.

And he made haste, and came down, and received him joyfully.”
