Star Witness

Sonrise on the beach

During an overnight camping trip, an ocean sunrise inspired Montana and Susanna to consider the great cloud of witnesses recorded in Hebrews 11.

“But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.”
Hebrews 11:6 KJV

Cloud of Witnesses

Dear Readers,

For today’s post, I’ve chosen to share some possible spiritual applications of Time warp: Sonrise on the beach, the cartoon featured in Star Witness. Many of my cartoons have multiple levels of meaning, but I prefer to allow each person to choose their own level of listening. When I discuss my cartoons, I sometimes hear: “I never would have seen that!” After reading this aside, and viewing the cartoon, do you have a fresh insight on faith? Share your comments below.

Creative story

Montana and Susanna, newly married, are camping on the beach. They wake up to a painted sky that mixes stars and sunbeams.

Spiritual application

Inspired by a friend’s favorite passage, (Hebrews 12:1-3) I featured the “cloud of witnesses” detailed in Hebrews 11. With my limited human imagination, this could have been one way God explained to Abraham that the generations of believers, through Abraham, would be as the stars (Genesis 15:5, Genesis 22:17, Genesis 26:4, Psalm 147:4, Daniel 12:3); as the sands (Genesis 22:17); using elements that surrounded Abraham to affirm His promises.

Abraham and Sarah, newly married, by faith leave familiar behind and travel into the unknown. They camp overnight in their tent on the sand, waking up to a visionary sunrise. God provides a visual explanation of His promises—a panorama starring the generations from Abraham through the sands of the ages; showing the stories of believers, until an Earth made new—washed clean (beach waves, campfire); without sin (the Holy City—sometimes a sunrise/sunset shows the closest visual of Revelation 21 that I can imagine).

See how Jacob (Genesis 32), Moses (Exodus 32) and Nehemiah (Nehemiah 9) use God’s promises to Abraham in their prayers.
