Erasing evil.

“The eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous, and his ears are open unto their cry.

The face of the Lord is against them that do evil, to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth.”
Psalm 34:15, 16 KJV

seal hunt

Despite her weariness, June scoured the large pots, thankfully blocking out the sight of the seal slaughter that the captain demanded in the Bering Sea.

“For how can I endure to see the evil that shall come unto my people? or how can I endure to see the destruction of my kindred?”
Esther 8:6 KJV

Peach Pit Row

peach lane

“After learning about forgiveness during family worship, Cream took the peach pits Bully Fred threw at her and planted them along the lane to the school. She convinced Bully Fred to dig the holes for the future peach trees.”

“Yet now be strong, O Zerubbabel, saith the Lord; and be strong, O Joshua, son of Josedech, the high priest; and be strong, all ye people of the land, saith the Lord, and work: for I am with you, saith the Lord of hosts:

According to the word that I covenanted with you when ye came out of Egypt, so my spirit remaineth among you: fear ye not.”
Haggai 2:4, 5 KJV

Rails East: Broken Links

Rockville Bridge, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania: “I befriended one of the conductors on our train, and during a station stop in Harrisburg, he took me to see Rockville Bridge that spans the Susquehanna River. He told me he had helped stop several attempts by the Confederate Army to destroy the bridge. The wind from an approaching storm blew out our candles, and in the darkness, I thanked God the war had ended.”

“And they said unto me, The remnant that are left of the captivity there in the province are in great affliction and reproach: the wall of Jerusalem also is broken down, and the gates thereof are burned with fire.

And it came to pass, when I heard these words, that I sat down and wept, and mourned certain days, and fasted, and prayed before the God of heaven,”
Nehemiah 1:3, 4 KJV

70×7+4: Reuben’s Story

clean gone:revealed

Tearful reunion.

“And Joseph said unto his brethren, I am Joseph; doth my father yet live? And his brethren could not answer him; for they were troubled at his presence.

And Joseph said unto his brethren, Come near to me, I pray you. And they came near. And he said, I am Joseph your brother, whom ye sold into Egypt.

Now therefore be not grieved, nor angry with yourselves, that ye sold me hither: for God did send me before you to preserve life.”
Genesis 45:3-5 KJV

70×7: Reuben’s Story

clean gone:in the pit

“We shall see what becomes of his dreams.”

“And Reuben heard it, and he delivered him out of their hands; and said, Let us not kill him.

And Reuben said unto them, Shed no blood, but cast him into this pit that is in the wilderness, and lay no hand upon him; that he might rid him out of their hands, to deliver him to his father again.

And it came to pass, when Joseph was come unto his brethren, that they stript Joseph out of his coat, his coat of many colours that was on him;

And they took him, and cast him into a pit: and the pit was empty, there was no water in it.”
Genesis 37:21-24 KJV

Hard Hearts

help needed

“In a feverish state, I recognized the sheriff ride past. Later, the travelling parson prodded me with his boot, then left.”

“And by chance there came down a certain priest that way: and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.

And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side.”
Luke 10:31, 32 KJV

dollars and sense

Since pies didn’t trail travel well, Susanna had worked out a voucher system with Harriet in Agate Beach to enable sharing a fresh-baked pie. As Susanna considered sending some vouchers with the bill of sale, she couldn’t figure whose side June was on, when June shared her thoughts on forgiveness.

“Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times?

Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven.”
Matthew 18:21, 22 KJV

Justice Seeking

sweet revenge

Susanna found it hard to imagine justice without breaking a commandment. If provided with an endless supply of blueberries, she could re-open the bakery, install that new stove, and build herself a luxury cabin.

“Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.”
Romans 12:19 KJV
