death valley national park

Returning home through California, a cowboy from Yukon Territory told Montana they would experience baked alaska the next day. As they reached a sun-salted basin between mountain ranges, Montana focused on the delicate petals of the cactus flowers as his creamy confection dreams melted.

“Is his mercy clean gone for ever? doth his promise fail for evermore?

Hath God forgotten to be gracious? hath he in anger shut up his tender mercies? Selah.

And I said, This is my infirmity: but I will remember the years of the right hand of the most High.

I will remember the works of the Lord: surely I will remember thy wonders of old.

I will meditate also of all thy work, and talk of thy doings.”
Psalm 77:8-12 KJV

The plantation owner saw June’s friendship with Moose, and promptly sold June to the captain of the ‘Frisco. June felt blessed on two accounts: she had a stool in the galley, and her dried orchid lei survived the boat ride to the ‘Frisco.

“Finally, brethren, farewell. Be perfect, be of good comfort, be of one mind, live in peace; and the God of love and peace shall be with you.”
2 Corinthians 13:11 KJV

Luau

During a luau hosted for the captain and his bride, Moose surprised June with an orchid lei.

“Keep me as the apple of the eye, hide me under the shadow of thy wings,

From the wicked that oppress me, from my deadly enemies, who compass me about.

They are inclosed in their own fat: with their mouth they speak proudly.”
Psalm 17:8-10 KJV

Tea for Two

In Tokyo Bay, June risked the captain’s wrath for a cup of green tea from Moose and a glance out the galley porthole.

“Jesus saith unto them, Come and dine. And none of the disciples durst ask him, Who art thou? knowing that it was the Lord.”
John 21:12 KJV

June learned to sing her frustrations into the sea while strumming Sam’s guitar.

“And God gave Solomon wisdom and understanding exceeding much, and largeness of heart, even as the sand that is on the sea shore.”

World Picnic

Skipping over the Russian Tea cookies and Pineapple Upside Down cake at the company picnic, June decided she’d better sample the Baked Alaska before the ice cream melted.

“Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people?”
1 Kings 3:9 KJV
