As June traveled to Agate Beach with Montana and Susanna, she savored the soft whispering pines and fresh blueberry biscuits. After several vespers at Agate Beach with Sam and Harriet, June found she could once again peacefully listen to waves breaking on shore.

When serving the crew their daily slop in the port of Juneau, June heard the sailors teasing one of the fresh “recruits”—calling him “Moose”. He had raised a bull moose from a baby, and it followed him everywhere. It raised a ruckus as the captain captured the young man, which earned him a whipping. June noticed Moose had kind eyes, despite his fresh wounds.
